A wood fire needs a good base of hot coals to light and stay lit.
This is easily accomplished with charcoal.
The amount of charcoal is dependent upon the smoker and its design.
Light the charcoal with one of the methods above. When most of the coals are lit you can start to throw wood into the firebox. If you keep up with the fire you can continue to use wood throughout the cook.
